Rules Outside the Bus are Followed

Select a safe place away from traffic where your child should wait quietly for the bus. Teach your child to approach the bus only after it is completely stopped. When entering or leaving the bus, children should look both ways before crossing the street. Children should take 10 giant steps away from the bus before crossing in front of the bus. If your child drops something in front of the bus, he or she should wait until the bus driver sees him before retreiving the article.

Rules Inside the Bus are Followed

Children should enter the bus in single file; go directly to a seat and sit down; talk quietly; stay seated while the bus is moving; keep the aisles clear; keep heads, arms, hands, and legs inside the bus at all times; and carry papers in a folder or backpack so they do not slip out of his or her hands.

Children with Special Needs are Protected

Many children with special needs will be transported on special school buses. However they are transported special adaptions may have to be considered such as: wheelchair lifts and tiedowns, adaptive seating, length of bus ride, and bus driver/aide training on special healthcare needs such as emergency tracheostomy changes and oxygen requirements. School Bus Safety Checklist

Talk to your children about the following:

  • Arrive on time for the bus.
  • Select a safe place away from traffic and wait quietly for the bus.
  • Only approach the bus after it is completely stopped.
  • Enter and leave the bus in single file.
  • Go directly to a seat and sit down.
  • Talk quietly.
  • Stay seated while the bus is moving.
  • Keep the aisles clear.
  • Keep head, arms, hands, and legs inside the bus at all times.
  • Carry papers in a folder or backpack so they do not slip out of your hands.
  • Never bend down to pick up anything dropped in front of or near the bus until the bus driver sees you.
  • If necessary, always cross in front of the school bus. Never cross behind the bus.
  • Take 10 giant steps away from the bus before crossing in front of the bus.
  • Listen to the bus driver and follow instructions.
  • Watch for traffic when leaving the bus. Look both ways before crossing the street.
