Home Safety

KIDS: BE SAFETY SMART AT HOME

Help make your home a safe place every day. Here's what you can do:

  • Don't play with medicine, cleaners, plants, or other poisons. They can make you sick.
  • If you find matches or lighters, tell a grown-up right away. Don't touch them.
  • Make a family fire escape plan with two ways out of each room and a safe meeting place outside. Practice your plan twice a year.
  • In case of an emergency, call 9-1-1. If you don't have 9-1-1 in your area, make sure you know the local number to call. Say your name, telephone number, address, and what is wrong.
  • Don't turn on the faucets in the bathroom or kitchen without an adult's permission. Tell a grown-up if your bath water is too hot.
  • Don't touch pots, pans, or cords on the stove, counter, or table. Never play in the kitchen.
  • Always go swimming with a grown-up. Wear a life jacket if you don't know how to swim.
  • If you see a gun, remember: don't touch it, leave the area, and tell a grown-up.
  • Don't play with toys that have sharp, broken, or missing pieces.
  • Wear a helmet and knee and elbow pads when you ride a bike, scooter, skateboard, or skates.
