Cystic Fibrosis and Physical Activity

There are many benefits of regular exercise:

  • Your heart becomes stronger
  • You can be active for a longer time
  • Your muscles get stronger
  • You will feel less short of breath when you exercise

There are also benefits that are especially important with Cystic Fibrosis (CF):

  • Your breathing muscles become stronger
  • Your bones get stronger
  • Your posture and breathing improve

Exercise has other benefits:

  • Mental stress affects you less
  • Depression can be prevented or treated
  • Anxiety is reduced
  • Your quality of sleep is improved
  • Self esteem is improved

Research shows that people with Cystic Fibrosis (CF) who are more physically fit live longer and feel healthier. Make physical activity a habit at an early age through family participation and support. Physical Education class is a great time to be active with classmates. Exercises should be appropriate for age and physical ability.

Having CF can make a person feel different from others. But since physical activity is recommended for everyone, find time to share it with family and friends.
